I would like to do my blog post that connects with Olivia Tetreault because I think she brought up very key points from the reading Privilege of Power and Difference. One point she brought up from what Johnson mentioned is that the only way to truly work towards a solution for these injustices would be to rewire how we react to being told we have a privilege. I understand that even today some may find it hard to admit that they don't have privilege because they don’t feel it or they have been oblivious to it. Privilege can be seen in many different situations whether it's letting a white person go first before a colored person or having men have better paying jobs. Olivia also mentions that people might take it as an insult and I totally agree because naturally we will always want to defend ourselves if we feel a comment being taken wrongfully. 

Olivia also stated, “While it is important to understand when you have a certain privilege, it is also important to acknowledge that just because somebody obtains one privilege, doesn't mean that they possess all of them.” I completely agree with this statement because a male does have better paying jobs and is seen as a stronger individual than a woman but what if they are black or hispanic then they could face issues like having someone view them and treat them differently because of their skin color. I am a girl who may have girl privilege like when people say “oh you're a girl so let's go easy”, but my skin color is tan and it isn’t hard to tell that I look Hispanic and can still face situations where Im oppressed because of where I come from/ how I look like. Privilege is not something to point out but a conversation to have with one another for a better understanding about what society has to offer depending on your race and why we have to go through it. 

Question: How can one approach talking about privilege without it coming out as an insult?

   I have really enjoyed being part of FNED 246 with my professor because it gave me more knowledge about how to be a better role model for my future students. Reading Aria shows me how to use my second language to help students feel welcomed and confident in who they are. I would want my students to know that they should feel safe speaking in their native language because nothing is wrong with being a little different. In a classroom I wouldn’t want my students to feel discouraged or separated from their peers who speak only english. I would encourage my students to work together regardless of a language barrier.  This week we were assigned to watch a Woke Read Aloud video and read the RI Department of Education's Guidance for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students. I believe that yes it can be challenging to understand how people identify themselves and in the video the teacher is taking the time to help kids understand that some people are different and its okay. It’s important to listen to one another and respect their decisions. It’s also important to not judge one another and assume things about their gender. At a young age I never really learned about the LGTBQ community unless it was on social media. Until highschool when I started to have teachers that were gay or transgender, and I also had the opportunity to take a class about the history of the LGBTQ community. I was blindly thinking about my life forgetting that there are people out their who are confused and scared about being who they are.
