Reading “Aria” the author stated, “But my father was not shy, I realized, when I'd watch him speaking Spanish with relatives. Using Spanish, he was quickly effusive. Especially when talking with other men, his voice would spark and flicker. Rare was alive with sounds. In Spanish, he expressed ideas and feelings he rarely revealed in English. With firm Spanish sounds, he conveyed confidence and authority English would never allow him.”. It makes me angry that the nuns in her school came into their house to speak with her parents because they thought she wasn’t doing a good job speaking English just because she speaks Spanish with her parents. At first yes it was a great idea because her parents wanted what was best for their children and they helped by changing to speaking English. However, I know for a fact that not every Hispanic or Spanish-speaking family has an easy life. I know personally my dad went through a lot to try and give me a better future and he works in construction outside whether it's blazing hot or freezing cold. At home is a time to be yourself and connect with your family, and I am sure her dad lost his spark because he was probably tired of not only dealing with raising his family but now having to change how he connects with his family by acting like a different person. The nuns who are her teachers failed her by their poor teaching methods. No one will want to learn or listen to someone who is not encouraging their students, but rather mistreating and giving attitude about what they're doing wrong. I can never fully respect a teacher who doesn’t truly want to help their students just because they are different. Every student communicates and learns differently, so getting to know your student's strengths and weaknesses is important to help them learn in ways that make it easier for them to feel motivated to learn and push themselves.

I really like how you brought up that home is the time to be yourself with your family members and foster connections with the people closest to you. Like you said, every student learns and communicates differently, so it is important that teachers realize the strength that comes with individuality and foster that individuality rather than try to shut it down.
